Tasting Notes

Tim Atkin South Africa 2020 Report

Deliberately made in a commercial, crowd-pleasing style, with 10 grams of dosage and lots of tangy red berry fruit, the Brut Rose is dominated by Pinot Noir, with 28% Chardonnay and Pinotage. Pales and appealing, with note notes of rose petal and raspberry and a hint of toast. 2020-23.

Product Range: Cap Classique

Boschendal steeped in history launched its first Cap Classique in 1981. This was the Boschendal Brut, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and it paved the way for a long lineage of award-winning Cap Classique wines from the Estate's cellar. Boschendal will be celebrating 40 years of Cap Classique in 2021. Dedicated Cap Classique winemaker, Danielle Coetsee has also been crowned as women winemaker of the year at the 2020 SA Women's Wine and Spirits Awards.

Vineyard

Pinotage, the offspring of Pinot Noir, was carefully selected to complement the elegant structure of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with luscious fruit. Grapes were selected from Boschendal’s finest vineyards and harvested in the crisp, quiet hours before dawn at the perfect sugar levels to achieve the mouthwatering freshness required for the making of base wine for a classic Cap Classique.

Vinification

After pressing the red grapes, the juice was bled-off immediately and blended with 20% Chardonnay wine. The result was a unique sunset salmon hue in the base wine. The base wine was bottled under crown-cap where it underwent secondary fermentation, the magical process where the Cap Classique’s unique bubbles are allowed to develop. The wine was furthermore given 12 months on the lees which allowed it to grow in complexity, adding depth and a pronounced fruit structure complemented by the seductive brisk sparkle. After disgorgement the bottle was closed with natural cork.
